Everyone can now access and use sites in this technology world. Copyright from metaloop.com |
Today’s technology world is flying at a teeth-clenching rate. With people like Tim Berners-Lee who made the World Wide Web, Douglas Engelbart who invented the mouse which made using computers easier, and Ted Nelson who offered clarity on technology to allow everyone to understand it, it is not surprising that technology has expanded in this way. As this movement forges ahead, communication is correspondingly shifting. People now post and comment on each other’s sites, whereas previously the web was used for publishing purposes. This shift greatly affects professional artists. Lev Manovich delves into this, discussing how even nonprofessional content still has an audience online (“Art after Web 2.0”). Yet, although this may seem unfortunate, if looked at in a different light it actually is beneficial. Viewers are now not limited to professional content, but have access to content written and posted by ordinary people who have a their unique voices. The ability to connect to someone who is a nonprofessional just like you may actually bring a refreshing vibe into the content. Although people should take care as to what they read and comment on, since the online content is unfiltered, they ultimately now are able to experience new perspectives and ideas.
Briana you make a very good point that now artists of any ability are capable of sharing their art with the masses and not just those that have an "in" in the right network. It's really interesting to see the art ordinary people just like us come up with and from the comfort of our own home too.
ReplyDeleteYou mention people should take care as to what they read and comment on and that is interesting because by posting online, artists are opening up their artwork to a whole new audience who will either tear their artwork apart or praise it and will have little qualms about doing so.
I really like the idea of a unique yet refreshing vibe. Ordinary people tend to have very interesting perspectives and ideas. It also gives a chance to students like us to get our name out into the world.
ReplyDeleteTo hear millions of voices commenting on issues IS refreshing especially if they are not simply parroting prevailing ideas and reflect instead the perspective of individuals or communities that aren't heard.
